Weekly memo for 11/4 - 11/8


Overview of what we did this week

Math:  
  • Completed the lesson on division; dividing one, two, and three digit numbers by 1-digit divisor
  • Practiced word problems using multiplication and division operations
  • Vocabulary learned: factors, prime numbers, composite numbers
  • Differentiated between prime and composite numbers

Language Arts:
  • Completed our Novel study of "The Hundred Dresses" by Eleanor Estes
  • Grammar - practiced the use of prefix: un, over, mis 
  • Finished our grammar packet on pronouns


Science:
  • Energy in the ecosystem
  • In-progress - Science project on ecosystem

Assignments/projects due


Science:
  • Ecosystem poster - due Friday 15th
ELA:
  • "The Hundred Dresses" - due Tuesday 12th
Student written reflection sheets must be signed and filed in class on Tuesday.

  • Dividing by 1-digit divisor
  • Using mental math to divide
  • Dividing numbers that are multiples of 10

Language Arts:
  • Novel study "The Hundred Dresses" by Eleanor Estes
  • Summary writing, character study 
  • Grammar - Pronouns and its usage
  • Descriptive essay writing - My favorite food


Science:
  • Study of interdependence of living things in an ecosystem
  • Causes and effects of interdependence among organisms in an ecosystem


 Homework

Math: Practice multiplication facts to 12

Science:  Read Science text book, study guide - unit 1-A 


Test

Math:  Test on Tuesday - 2-digit multiplication

Science: Test on Friday - Unit 1 A, living and non-living things in an ecosystem


Halloween

  • Parents, please let me know if and when you are planning to get treats for halloween
  • Please be reminded that students will change into their costumes in school just before the parade @ 12:30
  • Please remember it is school policy to avoid any accessory that is violent in nature, such as toy swords and guns.  Suggestive blood should be avoided.

  • Multiplication by 2-digit using partial products and standard algorithm
  • Used graph paper to show partial products

Language Arts:
  • Novel study "The Hundred Dresses" by Eleanor Estes
  • Summary writing 
  • Grammar - learning about adjectives, synonyms and antonyms

ELD rotation will begin from Monday 10/21


Science:
  • Study of the different water ecosystems
  • Compare and contrast the living and non-living conditions of the of saltwater and freshwater ecosystems

Science:  Finish test review practice - unit 1-A

Overview of what we did the week of 9/23 - 9/27

  • Used the Hundreds chart to identify patterns for multiples of 2,5,9
  • Practiced using arrays as visual models to solve multiplication problems
  • Used repeat subtraction to represent the meaning of division
  • Essential understanding:  Multiplication and division have an inverse relationship
  • Vocabulary learned:  dividend, divisor, quotient, inverse operation

Language Arts:
  • Essay writing in progress - My goals in fourth grade
  • Edited paragraphs for run on sentences and proper application of punctuation.
  • Introduction to writing summary paragraph

Wordly Wise:
  • Completed comprehension questions lesson 3 

Social Studies:
  • Used "Tree thinking map" to present the lesson - "How earth is divided" in a visual format

Science:
  • Discussed and gathered information on Lesson 1 - ecosystems, parts of the ecosystem, comparison between Polar ecosystem and desert ecosystem
Art:
  • Work in progress - theme "California's Forest Giants"

 Homework

Language Arts: Finish essay 

Wordly wise: Practice spellings and vocabulary meanings for lesson 3

  • Completed our lesson on the different regions of California

Science:
  • Discussed and gathered information on Lesson 2 - living things in the ecosystems, life processes, and effect of non-living things on the living thing components of the ecosystem
  • Used science study guide to reinforce understanding and answer essential questions

Art:
  • Artwork on display -"California's Forest Giants"
